Marketing Manager - Shared & Earned
How does everyone manage conversations with their boss when you need flexibility to pick up kids, etc? I want to make sure the chat is productive, but worry that it might come across that I'm looking for special benefits.

I try to frame the conversation around expectations and trust, rather than just asking for flexibility. Before I talk to my manager, I make sure I can show my work won’t be impacted— eg. I plan my schedule so key meetings are covered, and I stay available online outside school pickup hours if needed. I’ll start earlier or work later to make up any time etc.
It’s also important to sense whether what you’re asking is realistic for your type of work—it has to work for both sides.

Easy to forget it's not just parents that need some flexibility. Making it part of broader positive chat about what you're delivering can help reinforce that your boss is getting a pretty great deal too.

Think of it like testing a campaign. You don’t have to lock in everything upfront. Suggest a trial period or some flexible hours for a week or two and check in after. It shows you’re open to making it work for everyone, and that can take the pressure off the ‘special benefits’ vibe.
