My parents are older and they don't understand how hard it is to get a job right now. They think I'm being too fussy or not applying for enough positions and their lack of support is really starting to hurt my self esteem. How can I convince them that I'm trying and that things are just tough for everyone right now?

So sorry it doesn't feel like they don't understand. I think it's really hard for parents to accept just how many places have moved into the digital age, where you don't just walk in with a resume anymore. So they are used to seeing a person "physically" looking for work, like "get and stomp the pavement"...but often you go in with your CV and you get told to apply online, so you've spent a day out for nothing.

Those conversations can be tough when they're just not aware of the real state of things right now. We're sure they mean well, but it's a lot of pressure to have on you. Some of the contents might not suit, but we share employment and job data fairly often, and that includes insights like application numbers, job ads etc. Check out the latest one here: https://talent.seek.co.nz/market-insights/article/seek-employment-dashboard-august-2025 You're doing great keeping at it. Good luck. 😊
