Hi all, I am a business student graduating next year who eventually wants to get to director level at a reasonably big or even global company. Question: is it worth applying to smaller companies when I graduate or should I just aim at the top companies from the start? I don't want to 'waste time' in an unserious job or somewhere that doesn't really add to my resume, but I'm not sure if I'm limiting myself too much only going for big companies. Any advice?

The smaller a company is the wider the roles tend to be.
You can try more, do more, find more chances to demonstrate skill and prove yourself.
The bigger they are, the more likely something is to be someone else's job, and you might not be allowed near it.

I think it's swings and roundabouts. Big companies get big clients and have some great systems in place to develop their people. They look awesome on your resume. But at a smaller company you might get opportunities to take on more responsibility earlier in your career, and that kind of experience can be invaluable. I'd be applying for both and using the interview to understand what opps might be available from a mentoring and development POV.
