So I'm very disgruntled at work right now - long story short, we hired a new person in our team slightly junior to me and I found out they're getting paid around ~5k more. I know it's not that much more at the end of the day but wtf. How do I bring it up with my manager? I can't not say anything. Discussing salary is banned at my company so I'm not sure how to initially mention it. Tips? Advice?

you're totally valid for wanting to say something~
if salary talk’s off-limits, start by asking for a chat about your “role and growth” or “how your current compensation aligns with your responsibilities” ...just about making sure you’re being paid fairly for the work you do.
might help to jot down what you’ve achieved lately or how your role’s evolved!! managers respond better when there’s something tangible to point to. such a tricky convo, but you deserve to feel valued!

What your colleague is earning simply means they are good at negotiating what they feel is their worth. You need to do the same. Don't mention what the other person is earning, it makes no difference. You need to give solid reasoning as to why you deserve a pay rise. You'll need to give a list of achievements and highlights of what you have done the past year.

"Discussing salary is banned at my company"
The new law protecting employees on this matter, search: the Employment Relations (Employee Remuneration Disclosure) Amendment Act 2025, which came into force on 27 August 2025.

How would going for a pay rise go down, without any mention of it? You could always say you've been researching what the going rate is, and you've found other roles which pay more, maybe even check on here for some examples?

Look for new work.
Find out why so you could Upskill or work on the reason
Ensure your new job pays you 5 k more a year or what’s the point of leaving.

I kind of get the policy of keeping salary confidential as it can cause some resentment on the team. I think making it 100% about you and the value you bring sounds like a good call. Good luck with it.

It is now legal to be able to speak about wages in the work place. You can bring it up, but it's all in the way you word it. Hope this helps!
