I’m really confused about the use of AI to write resumes and cover letters. On the one hand, I’m hearing it’s a bad look to prospective employers, and seems like you’ve made minimal effort. But on the other, we’re being told that we need to adopt and embrace the use of AI in our every day. Thoughts?

No sin in using AI to assist with writing your CV and or cover letters, however, you do need to pay close attention to the language used and also ensure that it is accurate and sounds like you and not some generic response generated by AI.

It helps me with my grammar and spelling which I'm not great at. I do worry a bit that people can tell if they read it. Not sure if they can?

when you use AI. You are showing that you're too incompetent to even simply write a cover letter

I'd say use AI for its efficiency and speed, and identifying the relevant skills for the role you're applying for. Add a personal touch by highlighting your experiences and accomplishments, in your own words. That doesn't sound like little effort to me 🙂

Employers often say candidates don’t put in enough effort when using AI, but the reality is many employers themselves rely on AI tools - ATS, HRMS, automated screening, even AI chatbots in hiring. Candidates are simply adapting to the system that employers created. If companies truly want more 'human effort,' they also need to rethink how much they outsource to automation. Until then, candidates hv little choice but to optimise with AI to stay competitive for keyword matches in CV to get select.

Think of Ai as your assistant. They can do the leg work but you must do the final changes and check.

I'd say use Ai if you're not familiar with writing your own, but use it as either a starting point or to check your own draft. Do not just set and forget. If it doesn't show up as Ai when you send through it will when you interview so always personalise.

Create your own content in your resume and cover letter. I'm pretty sure most of us will have all our thoughts jumbled and will struggle to articulate it correctly or not to present the documents in a clumsy way. Talk to AI and tell what you want, and with a series of iterations it will give you a good final product. Another tip, if you give it the details of the job, it will make your cv align with it, but again, information must align with what you are and do. Else you're just over selling.
