Is this normal? I interviewed for a role with the potential boss/manager and the person who is leaving - so Id be taking their role basically. The boss was warm and friendly, but the other employee seemed kind of disinterested and it's really thrown me off knowing if it was a good interview or not. Does anyone had this happen before? I feel like it's a bad sign?

Don't put weight on the person leaving, as the others said, they're will 100% checked out. I would however want to know why they're leaving... what the rest of the team are like, what the environment is, the team culture. They may genuinely not have fitted in the team but, it also might be a bad work environment so, see if you can look into that.

I've had similar happen before, and I can only assume it means either the person has lost interest in their role and are just there to do handover OR the workplace has some issues, and they are unhappy. People may not always leave over unhappiness, but this would make me think something is going on.

this is something very unfamiliar. first time I'm hearing about it. I don't find it abnormal, but quite convenient instead. I mean, you can at least expect what type of workload you'll be dealing with when you iv with the person who used to do the work. As for the part where he/she seems uninterested.. nothing much you can do. Just wait for their follow-up and see what their answer is. If the person is just there for handover, that's good! Means the process will be easier for you in the future.

I wonder if they were already pretty much checked out, and possibly so invested in whatever they are going to next, that the interview wasn't their priority. Does not excuse the behaviour, but it may not necessarily be anything you did, or didnt do. It also could be a sign that something isnt right in the workplace, but if everything else seems great, I wouldnt focus on it too much.

yeah i’ve seen that happen before, it doesn’t always mean anything bad. sometimes the person leaving is just checked out already. how did you feel overall about the interview?

Nobody who is leaving wants the new hire to be better than them. Could be that

this has happened to me alot during my working career. it's either the employee training you be careful they could be teaching you the wrong things to get you into trouble & you end up loosing your job or something so they seem irreplaceable. The other thing it could be which has only happened to me once is that it's a warning sign from the employee warning you your boss your about to work for is toxic & has poor management experience knowledge & skills. Keep your nose clean for more than 90days

Sometimes the person leaving is checked out or even low-key salty about being replaced. Doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a bad gig, it could just be awkward timing. If the manager was warm and engaged, that’s a much better sign of what the culture’s like going forward
