I recently resigned from a role due to unclear expectations and a personality clash with my manager. She offered to be a reference, and I provided her details when I was told I was a preferred candidate. However, I learned this week that my application won't proceed because her reference raised concerns with the interview panel. I realize I was naive in trusting her. When asked for referees, I felt I had no choice but to provide her. What should I do differently next time during reference checks

Been there mate. Don't feel like you have to give your old boss if you know they won't back you. A supervisor, senior on site, or even a client you worked with can step in as a referee. If they ask for your last manager, just say straight up there were differences in work style and you'd rather give someone who can actually talk about your strengths. Always line up refs early so you know they've got your back. Having a couple of solid options takes the pressure off one dodgy one.

sorry you had to go through that. I understand that it must been tough to realize that. Pls next time you choose the right person that can give good constructive feedback about your performance and personality, even if they're not your manager. If you have a trusted colleague, team lead, or someone senior who worked closely with you, they might be a better option.
