Been in a pretty standard desk job for years. It’s stable and pays alright, but I keep thinking about the healthcare industry. I’d have to retrain from scratch and probably take a pay hit for a while. For anyone in NZ who’s done it, was it manageable? Study load brutal? Finances a shock?

Operations Executive
I haven’t done it myself but I know a couple people in NZ who switched from office jobs to healthcare. They all said it was manageable, just a big adjustment. Study load isn’t “impossible” but it’s full on, especially with placements. And yeah, the pay dip at the start is real. Most of them said the first year felt like a shock, but if you actually care about the work, it’s worth it long term.

Any kind of career change is really challenging but also super rewarding. No matter how hard it is to make the change, being able to get up every day to something you're passionate about is worth that struggle. Just do your research about the reality of the industry/role you're looking to get into to make sure it's not just a case of the grass being greener on the other side.

It's totally doable if you're genuinely drawn to it. Maybe you could look into support options like student loans/allowances and some employers offer grad programs with decent pay once you're qualified. Perhaps you could talk to people who actually worked in the specific area you're interested just to set your expectations right. All the best to you, Ollie!
