I’ve been an office worker my entire life (now in my late 40s) and I’m tired of it, really just unmotivated to sit at a desk for 8 hours a day, plus I don’t really get any sense of purpose from my job. I want a radical change and to study environmental science and work outdoors/do something that benefits the environment. Does anyone have any advice or personal stories of making this kind of career jump at this age? Were you successful? Any regrets? I need hope...

Dont ever feel stuck in a job, life is too short to be doing something that you grudge. Make it work, take study in your career and follow your dreams, easier said than done but it is possible. Best of luck to you

We'll let the community handle the specifics of their stories, but we've got something to help you kick start the rest of the planning: https://www.seek.co.nz/career-advice/article/download-seeks-free-professional-development-planner The career planner is free, and it takes you through the whole process of working out what you want to do, not do, do more of, all that stuff. Bit of a guided way to think about... what comes next for me?

Exciting! It’s never too late for change, even if it’s not always easy. I actually went the other way, 13 years hairdressing (long days, tired arms!), then shifted into social media for the communication side I loved. Totally get the desk job struggle, I still have to remind myself to mix it up, go for walks, I do some volunteer work in outdoor settings as well otherwise it becomes very easy to feel chained to the office. It also helps me network with people, in case I ever do want a change.

Your attitude problem permeates even what you call hope. Would you prefer to stand for your work week? You don't like desks? Good luck

Orchards around the country will be on the hunt for work outdoors soon (I live in a small orchard town) it could be the sort of change you need for a short while (unfortunately not usually a long term option though...). Keep thinking outside the box! something is bound to take your interest soon enough 😌
