Got fired today - sad and stressed about it but I saw it coming. I'm here for words of encouragement as it seems bleak out there. I'm mentally drained to be honest. What are the sensible next steps for someone who's just lost their job?

Really sorry to hear it. I went through something similar a while back and while it felt awful at the time, looking back it was actually a big turning point for me as it made me think about what I really wanted to be doing and led me to a positive change. That may not be an option for you I know but if you get a chance to take a bit of time and think about where you want to go next, who knows? Best of luck with it and look after yourself.

Sorry to hear you've run into a bit of a speedbump. Happens to plenty of people, hope it's not been too tough on you.
Are you taking any time out to process things and rest, or getting back into the search right away? And the big question is always, will you be heading back into the same work or thinking it's time for a change?

Just wanted to say that I've been there and know it's awful. Honestly if you can take a beat to just look after yourself for a bit it's worth it. That whole experience can really burn you out. Hope it works out.

Medical Laboratory Scientist
I didn’t get fired, I got pregnant and was sick with hyperemesis and they refused to accept my medical certificate to reduce the very long and strenuous hours I was expected to work. 40hrs/week on contract plus 15+ hours rostered overtime, nights & weekends on call too. They basically forced me out. Best career move I ever made. Toxic workplace & atrocious rosters gone. I took some time to be mum, then went back to study. I just graduated (again) & now in a much better position to look for jobs.

General Manager
Lots of people have said that they are struggling to get interviews right now due to the huge number of applicants for roles.
I would concentrate on counting out your skills & achievements. Highlight them and ask AI (co-pilot/chatGPT) to help you make the best lay out for your CV, so that it is picked out in the preliminary screening stage.
Don’t let AI write your whole CV though. You need your human talents for the full content.
This should help you see your skills! Might be a fresh start?

Customer Service Support
So sorry to hear that happened and hope you are doing ok. What industry were you working in? It is tough out there but all I can say is take a breather and when you are ready, start to put some applications out there. Are you able to go through MSD for support? Sometimes they refer you to external resources which help with getting you back to work, I have done this. Do you have anyone you worked with who will give you a reference?
