New Zealand's fastest growing jobs

The year finished on a positive note for New Zealand’s employment market with a 1.8% year-on-year increase in job ads on SEEK. While some industries raced ahead, others recorded a decline. How did your industry perform?

The Community Services & Development sector led the way with 27% year-on-year growth. Jeremy Couchman, Senior Economist at Kiwibank, points to the growing population and government policy as the likely causes. “With a relatively new government, there was a broadening of spending in these areas,” he says.

The Consulting & Strategy industry was in second place with year-on-year growth of 21.5%.

The Mining, Resources & Energy industry came in third place with a 13.4% increase in job ads on SEEK compared to 2018. “The government recently announced that it won’t be granting any new permits for offshore oil and gas drilling, so I expect that existing permit holders ramped up their activity last year while they still have an opportunity for exploration,” Couchman says.

Where was the biggest decline?

The Sales industry recorded the greatest decline for 2019 with 11.6% fewer job ads year-on-year. Couchman says this may be due to a slight pull back in consumer confidence.

Call Centre & Customer Service saw a 10.3% year-on-year decline. “This may be due to growth in online customer service,” Couchman says.

Meanwhile, job ads in the Insurance industry slipped by 8.6%. “The regulators were keeping a close eye on the Insurance industry last year,” Couchman explains. “This may have had an impact on the market.”
