1. Support Worker (Kaiāwhina Tiaki Tangata)
If you find caring for others rewarding, this kind of work could be ideal for you. Support Workers play a really valuable role in supporting vulnerable people. As a Support Worker, you would assist individuals and families with a range of household and personal tasks such as filling out paperwork, administering medication and providing companionship and day-to-day support. Most Support Workers learn the skills required on the job, however, it could be helpful to complete a New Zealand Certificate in Health & Wellbeing (Support Work) at various levels. Some employers may also require a police check and valid driver’s licence.
2. Chef (Pūkenga Tao Kai)
If you’re passionate about food and enjoy working at a faster pace, then a role as a Chef or a Cook could be worth exploring. What you do each day depends on where you’re working (for example, restaurants or catering events) and your chosen area of specialisation. You don’t need a formal qualification, however a New Zealand Certificate in Cookery (Level 3) or a Bachelor of Culinary Arts can be helpful. Alternatively, you can complete a New Zealand Cookery Apprenticeship, which allows you to work if also studying a New Zealand Certificate in Hospitality (Cookery) (Level 4).
3. Retail Sales Assistant
If you think of yourself as a people person and enjoy interacting with others, a role as a Retail Sales Assistant could be for you. This role requires working in shops and providing a high-quality customer experience by greeting customers, establishing their needs and helping them to find products. It also involves assisting with the day-to-day operations of a store. Working in retail often also has the benefit of flexibility in hours if you’re looking for full-time, part-time or casual employment. On-the-job training is typically provided, so no formal qualifications are needed. If you’re looking to further your career in retail, a Sales Assistant role can be a great pathway to more senior roles, such as Retail Store Manager.
4. Store Manager (Kaiwhakahaere Hokohoko)
If you consider customer service a strength of yours and enjoy managing people, a role as a Retail Store Manager could be a great option for you. There are plenty of opportunities out there right now. No formal qualifications are needed, but strong communication, leadership and problem-solving skills are essential. To help fast-track your path towards becoming a Retail Store Manager, you might consider completing a New Zealand Certificate in Retail (Level 3 or 4) while working.
5. Administration Officer
If you’re organised, have great time management skills and attention to detail, you have the ideal qualities of an Administration Officer. This role can be quite fast paced, with a range of responsibilities including general administration, customer service, managing schedules and appointments, monitoring stock levels and preparing regular reports. No formal qualifications are required to be an Administration Officer as on-the-job training is usually provided, but customer service, accounting and computer skills will always come in handy.
If you’re someone who thrives on building relationships and enjoys working with clients, a role as a Sales Account Manager could be a great fit for you. In this position, you’ll be responsible for managing client accounts, identifying sales opportunities, and ensuring clients are satisfied with the products and services provided. You’ll also spend your time developing strategies to meet sales targets, negotiating deals, and collaborating with various teams within the company. Strong communication, problem-solving, and negotiation skills are key in this role. Formal qualifications are not required for this role, however a Bachelor’s degree majoring in business, commerce or marketing, or prior experience in sales or customer relations, can be helpful.
