What's it like to be a Youth Worker?
A Youth Worker (Kaimahi Taiohi) supports young people through challenges and helps them build life skills and mana. Youth Workers can provide basic counselling and interventions, and give advice on education and training. They help young people manage a range of issues that can include family conflict, homelessness, substance addictions and unhealthy relationships. When addressing more complex needs, Youth Workers can connect young people with other professional services such as healthcare specialists.
Tasks and duties
- Meeting with young people to identify and discuss their challenges.
- Providing support one-on-one or in group settings.
- Arranging food, shelter and clothing for young people in need.
- Providing crisis counselling to those experiencing trauma.
- Referring clients to appropriate specialists and liaising with teachers, social workers, local authorities and parents.
How to become a Youth Worker
To become a Youth Worker you usually need to study and gain a qualification.

Complete a New Zealand Certificate in Youth Work (Level 4), New Zealand Diploma in Youth Work (Level 6) or Bachelor of Youth Development.

Secure an entry-level role to gain experience. You could also join a volunteer program while studying to develop your skills.
