What's it like to be a Leading Hand?
A Leading Hand oversees the work of a small team within a larger organisation, ensuring tasks are completed to the correct standards and within set timeframes. As a more senior role, a Leading Hand might be in charge of important projects within a company. Their role can also include training new team members, overseeing safety compliance, and in some settings, Leading Hands may also be required to carry out hands-on work alongside their team. This role is common in the construction and manufacturing industries, but similar roles can be found in many sectors where teamwork is important.
Tasks and duties
- Supervising and managing a team of workers, often on a specific project or task.
- Ensuring health and safety regulations are adhered to within a team.
- Analysing and planning job assignments to employees, tracking and documenting their performance.
- Providing technical guidance and insight to team members, working hands-on when needed.
- Collaborating with higher management to discuss job completion or any issues within a team.
- Liaising with clients and contractors, representing a business and project team.
- Providing training and developmental guidance to improve employee skills.
