What's it like to be a Laboratory Assistant?
A Laboratory Assistant usually performs sample analyses, cleaning and setting up lab stations, as well as recording and interpreting test results. Laboratory Assistants often need to understand safety protocols to be able to use and maintain lab equipment. Working in a variety of industries including hospital and clinical settings, academic research labs and pharmaceutical or biotech companies, Laboratory Assistants can occassionally contribute to scientific knowledge and research.
Tasks and duties
- Performing laboratory tests and procedures, typically under the direction of a laboratory technician or scientist.
- Collecting, preparing and testing samples, following strict methodologies to ensure accuracy.
- Maintaining and cleaning laboratory equipment, such as microscopes, centrifuges and other tools.
- Keeping a laboratory stocked with necessary supplies and materials.
- Recording and sometimes analysing data obtained from laboratory tests.
- Observing strict safety procedures and regulations to avoid contamination.
- Assisting with the preparation of laboratory reports and documentation.
