What's it like to be an Estimator?
Estimators are professionals who calculate the time, labour and materials required to complete a project. They study proposals, blueprints, and specifications related to construction or manufacturing to make cost projections. Estimators can work in a variety of industries, such as construction, manufacturing, or even software development industries. They often work closely with engineers, architects and contractors to ensure accurate calculations, which then assist in making informed decisions. Evaluating the cost-effectiveness of projects or products, and considering alternative methods or materials to reduce costs, are common responsibilities of Estimators in their respective fields.
Tasks and duties
- Gathering information on proposals and specifications to calculate costs for product manufacturing or service delivery.
- Analysing company data, monitoring budgets and pricing to create and maintain detailed cost databases.
- Working closely with various teams such as project managers, sales or finance, to develop a comprehensive understanding of project requirements and costs.
- Evaluating financial implications, such as materials, labour and time needed, to provide a detailed end-to-end estimate of a project.
- Preparing and presenting estimates and cost plans to clients or company stakeholders, supporting the decision-making process on project feasibility.
- Updating relevant information as a project progresses and as changes occur to minimise risks and keep estimates current.
- Maintaining close relationships with suppliers and contractors to ensure accurate cost estimate and potential savings.
