What's it like to be a Civil Engineer?
A Civil Engineer (Mataaro Metarahi) works with contractors and other professionals to plan, design and build infrastructure. They typically specialise in an area of civil engineering such as structural, municipal, transport, water, geotechnical or environmental. Civil Engineers play an important role in developing infrastructure that benefits society, such as roads, bridges and water systems.
Tasks and duties
- Analysing site locations and surrounding areas in order to determine the feasibility of a construction project.
- Developing detailed designs and plans using a range of computer software programs.
- Resolving design challenges as they arise.
- Managing budgets and project resources.
How to become a Civil Engineer
To become a Civil Engineer, you need to complete a university degree and gain industry experience.

Complete a four-year Bachelor of Engineering (Honours).

Secure an entry-level position within Civil Engineering to gain industry experience.

Join Engineering New Zealand Te Ao Rangahau as an Emerging Professional.
- 4.
After five to eight years in the profession, apply to become a chartered professional engineer (CPEng), which is an internationally recognised accreditation. To qualify, you need to complete an assessment to demonstrate competence.
