What's it like to be an Underwriter?
An Underwriter often determines the risk of providing insurance or loans to applicants. They review and assess an individual or company's financial background and history to evaluate their ability to meet their financial commitments, while remaining profitable for the insurer or lender. Underwriters can be employed across multiple industries such as banking, insurance and real estate amongst others. This role typically involves significant data analysis to calculate possible risks, alongside frequent liaising with professionals like risk assessors or financial advisors.
Tasks and duties
- Evaluating financial information and risk factors to determine the suitability of providing insurance coverage.
- Reviewing insurance applications to ensure all questions have been answered and necessary information is collected.
- Working with brokers and clients to rectify potential underwriting issues.
- Assessing and predicting possible risks posed by applicants to an insurance company.
- Calculating possible payouts due to claims and setting appropriate premium rates.
- Monitoring insurance policies to ensure ongoing compliance with underwriting guidelines and regulations.
- Collaborating with actuaries, statisticians and other professionals to determine and review insurance policies.
