What's it like to be a Pharmacy Technician?
A Pharmacy Technician (Kaihangarau Rongoā) supports Pharmacists in preparing and dispensing medication to patients. They perform tasks like measuring, mixing, counting out, labelling and recording amounts and dosages of medications according to prescription orders. Pharmacy Technicians commonly work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, retail pharmacies and clinics. They may also conduct inventory checks and inform pharmacists of any shortages or excess supplies of medication. This profession requires strong attention to detail, understanding of medication and dosages, and excellent interpersonal skills to liaise with both medical professionals and patients.
Tasks and duties
- Assisting pharmacists in preparing and distributing prescribed medications to patients.
- Gathering the correct patient information to input into a computer system and maintaining patient profiles.
- Communicating with healthcare providers for prescription clarification, refills and authorisations.
- Managing drug inventory by stocking and organising pharmacy shelves and alerting pharmacists of any shortages or discrepancies.
- Preparing insurance claim forms and managing patient billing.
- Maintaining cleanliness and safety standards in all work areas.
- Staying updated with knowledge about new medications and healthcare developments.
