What's it like to be a Bus Driver?
A Bus Driver (Kaitaraiwa Pahi) is a skilled driver who transports passengers to their destinations, focusing on road safety and the safety of their passengers. They can work in cities along city bus routes, long-distance on cross-country and inter-city routes, between tourist destinations or for tour companies. They also work for schools, particularly in areas where students can’t take public buses. Bus Drivers should have knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance, as they’re often required to check that their vehicles are working properly before a shift.

- Checking tickets and transport passes.
- Ensuring the bus does not fill over capacity.
- Driving a designated route efficiently and safely.
- Ensuring travel rules are not broken by passengers on the bus.
- Maintaining and monitoring the vehicle’s parts and fuel level.
How to become a Bus Driver
To work as a Bus Driver you will need specific driver’s licences and endorsements.

Hold a full driver’s licence (Class 1) for a minimum of two years, with a clean record.

Get a Class 2 (for medium rigid vehicles) or Class 4 (for heavy rigid vehicles) Heavy Vehicle licence, depending on the size of the bus you want to drive.

Be able to pass a health check and background check, and have no major criminal convictions that would prevent you from working with the public.

Get a Passenger Endorsement to your driver’s license, which allows you to legally transport passengers.
