What's it like to be an Academic?
Academics are experts in their chosen fields, often working in a university setting to conduct research, teach and publish scholarly articles. Their work is centred around the pursuit of knowledge and sharing this with students and the academic community. This can involve delivering lectures, supervising postgraduate students and participating in departmental meetings. They may also contribute to their institution's administration. Their work allows for deep specialisation, making universities intergral for advancing knowledge, innovation and societal development.
Tasks and duties
- Conducting research and publishing results in scholarly journals, books or conference presentations.
- Providing instruction and supervision to students through lectures, seminars and tutorials.
- Developing, planning and modifying curriculum in accordance with disciplinary trends and institutional requirements.
- Advising students on academic matters such as course selection and progress towards graduation.
- Serving on academic or administrative committees that deal with departmental matters, faculty governance and academic regulations.
- Applying for and managing grants to fund academic research projects.
- Keeping up-to-date with current knowledge and developments in a field of expertise.
