Assistant Accountant

About the Role 

Waste Management has an opportunity for a talented and motivated Assistant Accountant to join our South Island Finance team based at the Christchurch Marshs Road super site.

You will work within a team of other accountants and finance professionals supporting the South Island operational units of Waste Management. You will assist the wider Finance team working on functions cutting across all the business units and on projects and tasks relating to finance. In addition, you will partner with one or more of these business units and work closely with them and their management teams to meet their finance needs and crucially help them improve their operations.

 

  • Participation in preparation of financial reports, budgets, general ledger reconciliations, journals, and data integrity checks.
  • Helping resolve finance queries from both branches and elsewhere within the organisation.
  • Data analysis to identify trend, errors and opportunities.
  • Creation, maintenance and filing and management of reports.
  • Providing assistance with other accounting and administrative tasks as required.

 

Skills and experience 

The ideal candidate will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to juggle multiple tasks and be flexible to support the business units as required. You will be able to work with and communicate effectively with people at all levels of the organisation.  

The successful applicant will preferably have experience working in a similar role with the sound financial numeracy and literacy skills and ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. You will have a ‘can do’ attitude with the ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team. A self-starter who is not afraid to come up with initiatives, to be proactive and motivated.  

Tertiary qualifications in Accounting, Commerce or relevant studies while currently studying towards CA or CPA is preferred.
