Want an IT or Communications career with a difference?

The NZ Army relies on IT and comms technology to be effective.

We require specialists who have a deep understanding of our highest-level equipment and systems, and how they are used in times of peace and combat.

You don't need any experience. We will train you to operate and maintain our top secret equipment, and keep us connected both in the office or training in New Zealand, and on operations around the world.

We currently have limited trainee spaces for:

  • Communications System Operator
  • Information Systems Operator
  • Operational Support & Information Systems Specialist

Initial Training

Upon successful enlistment into the Army you will be posted to Waiouru Army base. Here you will do 16 weeks of basic military training to find out if you have what it takes to be in the Army.

Once you have finished your basic training, you will begin your trade-specific training and courses in Linton, Palmerston North.

Salary and Benefits

  • All clothing and equipment provided free of charge.
  • Free medical and dental care.
  • Access to subsidised food and accommodation.
  • Free gyms, pools etc on all camps and bases.

As a recruit, you will earn approx. $39,781, and move up to approx. $51,177 when you begin trade-specific training. Your salary will continue to rise as you move up through the ranks and gain experience.

Entry Requirements

  • NCEA Level 1.
  • At least 17 years, 8 months old on the day you enlist.
  • No criminal convictions.
  • Medically and physically fit.
  • No decreased colour perception.

Security and Citizenship
