NZ On Air is an entity created to increase the diversity of public media available to New Zealand audiences. Their prime statutory objective is to reflect and develop New Zealand identity and culture. NZ On Air operates in a dynamic and challenging public policy environment, but also, an environment in which current technologies are driving changing audience behaviors and existing models are challenged.

As the Chief Executive you will be responsible for inspiring the organisation with new possibilities to champion great New Zealand public media that is valued and enjoyed by many New Zealand audiences, and leading and driving NZ On Air’s responses to change, ensuring strategy and funding decision making is integrated, future focused, thoughtful, transparent, and relevant to their audiences and stakeholders. As the Chief Executive you will have an excellent understanding of the media sector in a dynamic and challenging public policy environment.


You will be responsible for developing and implementing strategy as directed by the Board and lead a small, busy agency that undertakes a wide range of operational activities. These areas include government and industry relations, audio/visual content and music investments, sector research, stakeholder communication, and corporate services.


The key functions of this role are:

  • Lead the development of clever and effective strategies that reflect and anticipate ongoing environmental change and that position NZ On Air as a sector leader.
  • Engage productively with key industry and government stakeholders, and other funding agencies, to ensure there is a healthy and helpful dialogue that leads to shared understanding and great collaborations.
  • Oversee activity with a strategic lens of prudent financial management and accountability.
  • Working closely with the Board to provide assurance that outcomes are being achieved, processes are of the required standard, and new ways to present useful trends and data are being identified.
  • Maintain effective communication and quality, transparent relationships with key stakeholders including national and community platform providers, content creators, industry and advocacy groups, relevant public sector agencies, members of the public.
  • Represent NZ On Air in public forums and clearly articulate NZ On Air’s strategy, policies and programmes, feeding back information to the agency to increase agency expertise.


To be successful in this role you will have a track record for delivering in the following key areas:

  • Exceptional big picture strategic business thinking skills with emphasis on objectives being tied to strategic direction.
  • A sense of self-awareness to inspire teams to greatness with empathy and your intentional positive impact on others.
  • The ability to identify opportunities to align team goals with the company strategy and goals.
  • A strategic lens of prudent financial management and accountability.
  • Uphold the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and lead development of the agency approach to the new Maihi Karauna.
  • Have a solution focused approach to issues, making and taking ownership for tough pragmatic decisions when necessary.
  • Proven senior leadership skills with sound business acumen, problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Thorough understanding of the workings, technology, dynamics and politics of the New Zealand media industry.
