Legal Counsel

Summerset is one of NZ's fastest growing companies and the third largest retirement village operator in the country. We design, build and operate retirement villages right across New Zealand. We are proud of our dynamic work environment and an equally diverse workforce.

We have an exciting opportunity for a lawyer with 2 - 5 years' PQE to join our legal team. Working closely with the Head of Legal, you will provide a broad range of legal advice across all areas of Summerset's business.

Skills and experience required

  • Law degree and practising certificate.
  • 2 to 5 years post admission experience gained at a top tier law firm or strong mid-tier.
  • A 'can do' attitude and a willingness to learn and take on new challenges.
  • Excellent analysis and interpretation skills.
  • Strong drafting and negotiation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver work accurately and on time.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective planning and prioritising skills.

This role is suited to a pro-active, solutions focussed individual who thrives under pressure.  Candidates from all practice areas are encouraged to apply.

Key responsibilities

  • Managing compliance with the Retirement Villages Act and general regulatory compliance.
  • Acting on large scale property developments.
  • Drafting and negotiating commercial contracts.
  • Assisting with governance and company secretarial matters.
  • Advising on NZX listing rule compliance.
  • Assisting business partners with key projects and strategic initiatives.

Previous experience in these areas is desirable but not essential, provided you are comfortable learning on the job.

What's in it for you?

This is a unique opportunity to join an NZX50 company at an exciting stage of its growth.

We offer a competitive salary, flexible working arrangements and employee share scheme entitlements.  While we would prefer the role to be based in Wellington, an Auckland or Christchurch base could be arranged for the right candidate.

If this sounds like you or someone you know, then we would love to hear from you! To receive a copy of the Position Description (including indicative salary range) or for a confidential discussion, please contact Robyn Heyman at robyn.heyman@summerset.co.nz or 027 506 5562.

Applications for this role close on the 6th of December.
