Intermediate Geospatial Developer

Company culture

Orbica is a specialist location data technology company with an industry edge locally - and increasingly - an international exporter of innovative and disruptive location data solutions.

As a challenger brand, we Orbicans pride ourselves on being pioneers of the location data frontier. We love to do the “too hard basket” stuff through a combination of tech smarts, out-of-the-box thinking and sheer determination.

We’re a tight-knit team that thrive on exploring unknown technological territories using open source and proprietary software, with a primary focus on extracting value out of data and smart visualisation in engaging and powerful mediums. If you like a fun, collaborative work environment, as well as opportunities to develop your career in new and interesting areas, Orbica may be the fit for you.

The role

Orbica is looking for an intermediate geospatial developer. You must live and breathe GIS and the wider geospatial sector, and you’ll be keen to further absorb the world of development through the skillsets and experience of current Orbicans. We value knowledge sharing so we’re looking for a team-player that likes learning new skills and domains and sharing their skills too.

We’ve got a plethora of super cool projects chalked up: we’re spearheading artificial intelligence, satellite technology and data visualisation in the location data industry. You’ll be working across a variety of projects with some of New Zealand’s big organisations including local/central authorities and private enterprises, with a view to international markets.

An eye for visualisation and an artistic slant that adds the x-factor to our creations will give you the edge we’re looking for.

You’ll need to be a good listener, quick learner, inquisitive, open to ideas, have a “can-do” ethos, a sense of humour, and be adept at developing tailored solutions for tricky problems.

We partner closely with our clients and value strong collaboration. We need a geospatial developer with a client-centric approach who enjoys client contact and communication, as well as partnering with clients to take their location data solutions to new heights. Agile experience is highly desirable.

Core skills

We would prefer our geospatial developer to have 3 to 5-years’ experience, but frankly, we’d be more impressed by an enthusiastic and inquisitive self-starter than someone who ticks all the boxes. If you think you have got what it takes, apply.

Some skills are essential. You must have technology experience including ArcGIS, ArcGIS server management, ESRI, API, GeoEvent Server, Leaflet, software development. Other skillsets that are desirable would be open source – Geoserver, PostGres and Post GIS – and big data.

What else do you bring that can take our client offerings to another level?

Please note: to be considered for this role you will need to hold a valid New Zealand work visa or New Zealand residency/citizenship.

If you’re our new Orbican, tell us why: send us your visually-engaging CV and a chatty letter telling us about yourself, why you are interested in location data and an innovative and forward-thinking solution you have developed that’ll blow our socks off.

The application form will include these questions:
  • Which of the following statements best describes your right to work in New Zealand?
  • What's your expected annual base salary?
  • How many years' experience do you have in a software development role?
  • How much notice are you required to give your current employer?
