The Pou Tikanga me Mātauranga Māori is responsible for ensuring that the productions, educational materials, organisational practices and services of Taki Rua benefit from tikanga and mātauranga Māori to uphold and advance the values of Taki Rua and extend its strength and effectiveness as the leading Māori theatre and performing arts production company. The Pou Tikanga me Mātauranga Māori reports to the Kaiarataki Toi.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to those listed below.
- Support the Kahukura (Chief Executive Officer) and organisation to increase and strengthen the usage of te reo Māori and tikanga in all Taki Rua productions and processes.
- Provide and assist Taki Rua with the expertise and resources to become and maintain being a bilingual company – by which we mean a company that embraces and enhances the te reo Māori within our work and for our audiences.
- Provide and assist Taki Rua with the expertise and resources to become and maintain being a bicultural company – by which we mean a Treaty-based organisation that recognises the partnership entered into between the iwi-Māori and the Crown, and recognises that New Zealand is a multicultural nation in which the tikanga, mātauranga, reo and mauri of tangata whenua are essential to the operations and mission of Taki Rua Productions.
- Build connections between iwi and Māori communities through our tikanga-based engagements in our work, especially through our productions, and build and foster relationships with stakeholders, other relevant individuals, groups and organisations.
- Organise all official pōwhiri/whakatau for Taki Rua.
- Contribute cultural expertise to the design and implementation of the services of Taki Rua, including but not limited to Taki Rua being paid for the provision of cultural services to other organisations when these services have been provided.
- Provide cultural competency training as and when required.
- Advance and uphold Ngā Uara o Taki Rua:
- Manaakitanga: engagements and relationships with all persons and groups are based on mutual trust, honesty, respect and reciprocity.
- Whanaungatanga: the importance of collaboration and mutual support in accordance with the dynamic of whanaungatanga is acknowledged in our internal and external relationships.
- Pūkengatanga: we aspire towards excellence in all of our dealings with others in order to create high quality outcomes in all areas.
- Kotahitanga: by working together we will enhance the mana and support the aspirations of Taki Rua and advance the interests of Māori theatre in Aotearoa.
- Kaitiakitanga: Taki Rua has responsibilities as kaitiaki in relation to the origins and past work of Taki Rua, the members of Taki Rua and the wider Māori theatre community, and the kōrero and mātauranga of the iwi and hapū of Aotearoa that is shared and expressed through Te Whare Tapere.
- Uphold the usage of te reo Māori and tikanga Māori in all Taki Rua processes and productions to maintain the intention that Taki Rua continues to celebrate, embrace and promote mātauranga Māori.
- High level of cultural competency and multi-lingual skills in two or more languages (spoken and written), firstly and most importantly te reo Māori and English and or including others.
- Skilled in upholding appropriate tikanga practices.
- Be a confident communicator with strong interpersonal skills.
- High level written, verbal and electronic communication skills.
- A positive attitude, energy and enthusiasm and ability to work in a self-directed manner with minimal supervision.
- Awareness of the community, cultural and political context.
- Awareness of theatre, performing arts world.
- Strong Iwi and Māori community networks and prior expertise building linkages between Iwi and other communities.
Expectations of Employees
In addition to the duties listed above, all staff are expected to:
- Respect and abide by organisation vision, mission and values, ensuring that their conduct is consistent with the organisation Code of Conduct and is fully compliant with the provisions of policies and procedures;
- Carry out general administrative functions related to their role and to the effective and efficient functioning of the organisation including the timely and accurate management of case files, relevant databases, and all service delivery communications and data.
- Comply with all other reasonable and legal directions of the Kahukura or relevant Executive as required.
- Communicate concepts, information and arguments efficiently in personal and group contexts and across all organisational levels.
- When representing organisations at internal and external events, ensure appropriate conduct and professional representation at all times.
