Senior Laboratory Technician

A fantastic senior opportunity has arisen in our civil engineering laboratory team for a focused and determined individual who wishes to develop a career in the 'technical services' sector of the civil construction industry.

Road Science is New Zealand’s leading designer and supplier of bitumen and bitumen based products. We have world class manufacturing plants and storage facilities for bitumen, emulsions and polymer modified binders. Road Science has five IANZ accredited civil engineering laboratories and a number of project specific mobile laboratories. We also provide expertise in pavement design, technical and consultancy services to our clients.

About the role:

Based at our IANZ Accredited Auckland (Penrose) Laboratory and reporting to the Laboratory Manager, this position provides technical support for projects throughout New Zealand.  The Laboratory is responsible for ensuring all products - such as asphalt, construction aggregates and soils are tested to the appropriate quality, standards and customer specifications. This will include laboratory and field testing giving a great balance.

Every day will be different in this dynamic work environment. You will be responsible for managing workloads, delivery times and technicians. Experience and a solid understanding of civil engineering testing is required to meet the needs of our customers and further develop the laboratory technicians.

About you:

You will possess relevant experience, qualification and have strong numeric, problem solving, scheduling and analytical skills.  You will also have a strong focus on zero harm and have be able to work as part of a team.

As the successful candidate for this role, ideally you will possess:

  • Previous work experience in a Civil Engineering Laboratory, including IANZ signatory status
  • Laboratory experience, preferably in the civil engineering field, both in laboratory based testing and field work
  • The ability to train staff and to distribute work to ensure laboratory technician development and the needs of the client are meet
  • The ability to calibrate, maintain and repair laboratory equipment
  • Solid computer skills and exposure to a wide variety of computer applications including the Microsoft Office suite
  • Excellent communication and time management skills
  • A current full Class 1 drivers licence

You will also need some flexibility to work at night and during weekends when the work demands.

You will be motivated to take on a number of different tasks for different people and enjoy solving problems and delivering outcomes to customers. The current team enjoy working together and having fun whilst getting the job done.
