Laboratory Technician - Microbiology

Watercare's laboratories provide analytical and related specialist services to a range of internal and external customers. This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated microbiologist to join a dedicated and supportive team. Reporting into the Microbiology Head of Department, we are seeking a reliable, hard-working and motivated microbiologist to join the team.

Key responsibilities and deliverables include:

  • Testing for microbiological indicators in potable water, surface water, marine and wastewater samples, as well as testing for selected pathogens including Salmonella, Legionella and Campylobacter in water samples
  • Preparing reference cultures for use as positive and negative controls and preparing/validating culture media
  • Keeping records on the performance of laboratory equipment (e.g. Temperature records for fridges, freezers, waterbaths and incubators).
  • Participating in stock-take activities by: i) Monitoring stock levels and expiry dates; ii) Ordering new stock; and iii) Assisting with the management of QA/QC records for consumables.

The preferred requirements for this role are:

  • A BSc in Microbiology or equivalent, commercial experience in a commercial IANZ accredited laboratory environment
  • Familiarity with ISO 17025 and IANZ Specific Criteria for Accreditation.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) as well as a high attention to detail and organisation skills
  • Reliable and able to perform to deadlines and the confidence and ability to handle pressure
