About us

At Pioneer Energy Ltd we work across an array of energy assets and locations, from Hydro and Wind to Thermal and Gas.  We are owned by a charitable trust, Central Lakes Trust and have a long successful history in the energy industry.  We have an exciting opportunity for the right person, based at our Washdyke Energy Centre, near Timaru.  The business works with a customer focus, managing and operating a steam generation plant consisting of various boilers at different sites, 7 days per week. The role offered is full-time and permanent.  Work is on a rostered basis of 8-hour days, 5 days per week.

We are seeking

We are looking for a fit and active person, living in the Timaru area, with an open and honest nature and a willingness to learn and be part of a small motivated and hardworking team. You may already be a qualified and experienced boiler operator or wish to learn as a trainee.  Our ideal candidate will be a team player and an excellent multi tasker. You will be open-minded, approachable, creative and be able to take initiative in your work. You will enjoy doing a variety of tasks and be keen to help get the job done.

You will have a strong desire to work with boilers and learn the associated equipment and systems. Be safety focused and prepared to work in an environment that includes high ambient temperature, noise, and dust.  You will know or learn to safely work with chemicals, high temperature/pressure steam, confined spaces, and other potential hazards. You must be able to climb stairs, ladders, and work at heights.

The Role

In this role, you will learn to operate all energy plant associated with the production of steam. You will operate boilers and associated auxiliary equipment.  You will, start and shut down boilers as needed, maintain fuel feed to boilers and regularly check auxiliaries, etc.  An individual hired into this position as a trainee will be trained to achieve the skills and knowledge necessary to obtain, Boiler Operator Level 3 qualification. When competent you will join a 1 week in 3 on call roster; you will be required to work every 3rd weekend and respond to call outs outside of normal hours. You may be required to work overtime from time to time.

Required Education/Skills

  • Boiler Operator Level 3 qualification and/or Secondary School NCEA Level 3 or equivalent for a trainee.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license. 
  • Must be PC literate, at least in Microsoft products.
