General Manager - Commercial & Operations

The company is regarded as a leader in the Ports and wider logistics/transport sector in New Zealand, having a reputation for consistently developing innovative solutions which add value to customers and partners.

This is a broad based role responsible for the commercial (sales, marketing, commercial strategy/contracts) and operational delivery aspects of the Port. The Port sees significant value in having commercial and delivery responsibilities held by one executive. This ensures absolute alignment between the commitments made to customers/partners, and operational service delivery activities.

As a member of the Executive Team the appointee will be accountable for enhancing the Port’s strategic positioning, maximising revenue, and most importantly, sustainable profitability over the long term. They will play a central role in managing engagement with customers and value chain partners, developing compelling and innovative solutions for customers. The delivery responsibilities include operational oversight of the Container Terminal and Bulk Port, as well as Port services (marine pilots, tug operations, berth planning and security). From a team perspective, the appointee will lead around 180 of the Port’s 230 staff.

Candidates will need to demonstrate:

  • Executive level commercial management/customer management/strategic B2B marketing experience within an appropriate setting - logistics, freight, ports, transport, B2B outsourced services et al.
  • Superb strategic and commercial skills to assist the Port to ideate and uniquely deliver innovative customer solutions which add value.
  • Previous experience leading operational teams, combined with the ‘adaptive leadership’ style to inspire a broad-based team which ranges from frontline operations personnel to specialist functional and commercial members.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills – at ease with customers, partners, the Port’s Board, industry groups et al.
  • Considerable financial acumen – can effectively manage the Port’s revenue line, and a very large cost base.
  • An understanding of health and safety disciplines and a commitment to delivering a safe work environment for Port employees and other groups operating on the Port.
