Adult Literacy and Numeracy Education Tutor

You will love tutoring foundation level students and working with others to give the best to our learners and our communities. Your passion for community education will be evidenced by your ability to connect with whanau and individuals from a range of diverse backgrounds.

About the role:

This role involves variety, will call on your expertise and may involve any of the following:

  • Work with our Intensive Case Workers to develop genuine, empathetic and supportive relationships with tauira and their whanau to capture their long-term and short-term goals;
  • Deliver assessment with the Adult Literacy and Numeracy Assessment Tool (LNAAT) and be able to interpret results;
  • Co-design a “pathways plan” to get tauira to where they want to go;
  • Respond to the individual learning needs of tauira and co-create suitable ways to evaluate tauira progress with the learner taking charge of their own learning plan and pace;
  • Facilitate learning sessions alongside tauira to increase the knowledge, skills and competence of each learner, taking into account their unique home and whanau situation;
  • Employ a wide variety of different teaching materials (electronic, physical and paper study materials) according to the learning style, pace and whanau commitments of each tauira;
  • Maintain records of tauira assessment results, attendance, self-evaluations of progress and feedback from both parties;
  • Ensure compliance with the regulatory requirements of NZQA and TEC.
  • Report your journey alongside your learners to the WLCT tutorial team;
  • Recognise that this is a cooperative and positive team who share successes, glitches and resource and teaching ideas with others to support everyone’s learning within our whare;
  • Work to connect with our students and our community to maintain strong, professional relationships within the region.


What you need:

  • You will hold a Diploma in Adult Education or Teaching and/or be working towards, or have already completed, the National Certificate in Adult Literacy and Numeracy Education (NCALNE) (Level 5).
  • NZQA Unit Standards 4098, 11281 and 18203 are desirablel.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience successfully working with learners to improve their Literacy and Numeracy skills is desired.
