Generation Controller

Context of the role

What you’ll do

The prime function of this role is to operate the plant in a safe, efficient and timely manner within operational guidelines, EGR/NZEM rules, and offer guidelines to meet output and performance requirements. Ensure that safe working and occupational health principles and practices are known and observed, and that all safety rules and procedures are complied with by Contact and other personnel working on site. 

  • Maintain knowledge of and comply with all industry safety rules, codes of practice and regulations whilst delivering HSE Performance and Safety from the System (SFTS).
  • Operate local and remote control power stations via DCS systems and respond to alarms / events.
  • You will monitor plant performance, maintain plant efficiency, whilst identifying and anticipating events to prevent failures. 
  • Carry out operational routines and inspections, identify and report any defective plant and apparatus.
  • Ensure that all activities and tasks are conducted in compliance with environmental consents and within station and company environmental guidelines and procedures
  • Maintain an operational log and routine check sheets.
  • Manage and execute electrical switching operations
  • Maintain and update operational procedures / check sheets as required.
  • Liaise with external organisations and services as required to meet operational day to day requirements, including Transpower (Dispatcher) and Contact Energy trading team
  • Carry out formal shift hand over process
  • From time to time in order to meet generation needs, you may be required to undertake operational duties on shift.
  • Assist with project and outage related activities.

How you’ll be successful

This position will require a broad set of skills and experience. Contact will seek and recruit talent that have the following key attributes and behavioural competencies:

  • Specialist qualification EnChem 3 or 4, 1st Class Stationary, 3rd Marine or equivalent
  • Experienced in operation and maintenance in a power generation environment
  • Experience monitoring plant condition
  • Relevant diploma / specialist qualification in electrical or mechanical trade or engineering
  • Integrity and high personal and professional standards
  • Skilled in the effective resolution of complex issues and problems
  • Able to develop tools that allow problems to be solved on an ongoing and  long term basis
  • In depth knowledge of electronic and technical control and protection systems
  • Experience with Eclipse permit system
