About the project
He Poutama Taitamariki (HPT) is a regional initiative designed to empower and enable youth at risk of long term unemployment and poor social outcomes. HPT is tailored to young people and provides intensive support to individuals during the course of his or her journey of life change, training or employment, however long that may be. HPT grew out of the small town pilot programmes KODE, GROW and the regional initiative T500. It has been operating for nearly two years and it represents a significant change in the way we work with and support some of the most vulnerable people in our communities and we are excited about the potential impact we can have. HPT combines a youth specific case management model with customised contracted services all of which have in-built manaaki tangata (long term pastoral care). Young people are at the heart of what we do in Northland and this dynamic project has had a significant impact on youth benefit numbers. In December 2016, partners embarked on this new approach with just over 2,600 young people receiving benefits. Today this figure sits at 2118. The issue of youth unemployment and disengagement has been acute in Northland but with initiatives like this, we are changing our story.

What skills do I need?
