Court Registry Officer (Part-Time), Dunedin District Court

This position is for a part-time role with standard hours of 20 hours per week. However, you may be required to work additional hours where business needs require this. The days you will work will be discussed at the interview.

At the Ministry of Justice we deliver people centred services to provide access to justice for all. Te tuku ratonga ā-tangata kia āhei atu ai te katoa ki te ture.

The District Court is the largest Court in New Zealand. Most New Zealanders who go to court will go through the entire justice process in the District Court. Each year, 160 Judges in 58 courthouses deal with approximately 200,000 criminal, family, youth and civil matters. Due to the volume of cases, the Court Registry Officer focus may vary from District Court to District Court. You may be work across all jurisdictions, including criminal, civil, and family or focused on one. At the Dunedin District Court we are a friendly and supportive team. We work together to deliver an excellent service to our customers and Justice sector stakeholders.

Your role

As a Court Registry Officer, you will work with a team responsible for the successful operation of the Court. You will liaise with multiple stakeholders including defendants, witnesses, family members, Oranga Tamariki, Lawyers, and Police Officers. You will able to communicate confidently with Judges within the courtroom and their chambers, as well as other members of the judiciary.

Your main responsibilities include:

  • Court Taking - this is the facilitating the running of the court. This includes introducing Judges (in English and Te Reo Maori), working closely with them in the Courtroom and Chambers, managing jurors and general administration of the court.
  • Customer Service - all courts have an onsite Customer Service area that customers can access for any court related matter. You will work to answer customer queries via face to face, phone or email interactions
  • Case management - this involves ensuring files are accurate and up to date. This part of the role involves a large component of data entry.

To be successful, you will need to be

  • Detail orientated and observant - the court has many different processes and case information needs to be accurate;
  • Self-aware - you'll understand our customers and will be confident working across a range of situations;
  • Multi-task - you'll understand that some of our processes are repetitive, but you'll be able to manage conflicting priorities and move from one task to another quickly;
  • Willing to learn - legislation and processes in the courts is always changing and you will be able to adapt and respond to feedback.
  • Resilience - there are times when working in the courts, you will be working on sensitive cases and sometimes at high volume.
  • The successful applicant may be required to travel and work in other regional courts, including the Timaru District Court. Due to this a full clean NZ Drivers licence is required.

What next

Starting salaries are generally between $48,853 and $57,473 on a pro-rata basis for the part-time hours and are dependent on skills and experience.
