Nominations sought for the New Zealand Artificial Limb Service (NZALS) Board

Background:

The NZALS is an autonomous Crown entity with a vision of independent and productive lives for the people they care for.  They deliver on this vision by manufacturing and supporting individualised medical devices (primarily prosthetics) with an integrated rehabilitation and coordination of care service.

The service has the following strategic objectives:

  • Our patients are at the centre of everything we do, receiving from NZALS’ ‘whole of life’, world-class services that deliver what they need at each stage of their journey.
  • NZALS expert workforce is responsive and able to develop, adapt and adopt innovation and technology to continually improve the service to and outcomes for our patients.
  • We adapt and customise technology to change the lives of the people we care for. We are responsible to our patients for understanding, accessing and bringing to them the best technological solutions budgets and our initiatives will allow.
  • NZALS supports equitable access to technology and services based on need.

The functions of the NZALS are set out in the Artificial Limb Service Act 2018 and include:

  • manufacturing, importing, exporting, marketing, distributing, supplying, fitting, repairing, and maintaining artificial limbs and similar devices
  • providing rehabilitative and other services to persons in connection with artificial limbs and similar devices
  • research and development in relation to artificial limbs; and
  • advising the Minister on matters relating to artificial limbs.

Opportunity/Skills and Experience

The Minister of Social Development is seeking nominations for one new appointment to the New Zealand Artificial Limb Service (NZALS) Board. Please note that for this appointment the Minister is looking for a candidate with:

  • a strong background in finance and accounting
  • a strong background in property management; and
  • strong experience in public sector business development
  • good leadership skills and political judgement, as well as strong relationship management and communication skills.
