Chief Executive - Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision

The New Zealand Archive of Film, Television and Sound Ngā Taonga Whitiāhua me Ngā Taonga Kōrero (Operating under the name Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision) is an independent charitable trust overseen by a Board of Trustees representing film, television, radio, archival, Māori and community interests.

Ngā Taonga is a bicultural, non-profit organisation, dedicated to collecting, sharing and caring for New Zealand’s audiovisual taonga. Their values, Conservation, Connection and Creativity, and their kaupapa centred approach drive everything they do and are the foundations which support them in being New Zealand’s audiovisual archive for Aotearoa.

As the Chief Executive you are responsible for leading and positioning Ngā Taonga as a trusted, modern guardian of New Zealand’s audiovisual heritage for the benefit of all New Zealanders. The primary focus of your role is to lead and manage the organisation to deliver its strategy and functions effectively and efficiently.

To be successful in this role you will have a track record for delivering in the following key areas:

  • Exceptional big picture business thinking skills with an emphasis on future-proofing an organisation to ensure it is fit for purpose.
  • A leadership style that embodies the kaupapa of the organisation to ensure it is well positioned to deliver on its strategy and priorities, now and for the future. This also includes being able to lead through change, as the organisation is likely to change its scope and scale in the next few years.
  • The experience to navigate within a complex environment and lead the vision setting and strategy development to meet future opportunities.
  • An understanding of the importance of the archiving functions, and the need to make the content safe and accessible, with an ability to see opportunities across the wider sector and partnerships.
  • Proactive in identifying opportunities to align team goals with Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision’s long term strategy and strategic objectives.
  • Have a solutions-focused approach to issues, making and taking ownership of tough pragmatic decisions when necessary.

This opportunity will appeal if you have:

  • Experience at Chief Executive or senior management level, including vision setting, strategy development and organisational development.
  • Experience in the public sector and an understanding of the machinery of government processes.
  • Experience and understanding of governance processes and, in particular, supporting a board.
  • Ability to build cohesion at a senior management level and take a collaborative approach to develop high quality relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience and skill in leadership and management of high performing teams, including the ability to coach, develop and inspire staff at all levels.
  • Knowledge and experience of the film or broadcasting, galleries/museums/libraries/archives or heritage sectors.
  • An understanding of the importance of the archiving functions.
  • An understanding the principles of te Tiriti o Waitangi and the implications of this for the work of Ngā Taonga.
  • Innovative and creative thinking approach to leading and building strategy in a changing world.
  • An excellent network of contacts and relationships across the public sector and industry.
