Human Rights Solicitor | Rōia

Applications are invited for the position of solicitor (rōia) for the Office of Human Rights Proceedings (Te Tari Whakatau Take Tika Tangata). This position will be a junior-intermediate role supporting senior litigators.

We envision the role will be full time, and based in Auckland.

The position:

  • OHRP provides free legal representation in discrimination and harassment cases under the Human Rights Act 1993, and breach of privacy cases under the Privacy Act 1993. This includes acting for clients in settlement negotiations, mediations, and proceedings before the Human Rights Review Tribunal.
  • The Office is a small team, headed by the Director of Human Rights Proceedings, and currently supported by two Senior Solicitors, a Legal Executive and part-time law clerks.

Responsibilities of the role include:

  • Assisting the Director to assess applications for legal representation.
  • Drafting legal opinions, submissions, correspondence and pleadings.
  • Appearing as counsel in the Human Rights Review Tribunal and courts.
  • Providing legal advice and representation to clients, including in relation to settlement negotiations and Tribunal proceedings.

The successful candidate may be able to demonstrate:

  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to write clearly.
  • An interest in discrimination, privacy and international human rights law.
  • Litigation/advocacy experience.
  • Resilience.
  • Some experience in working with vulnerable individuals/groups would be ideal.
  • Experience working in or around community or advocacy organisations a plus, but is not required.
  • Lived experience as a member of vulnerable or marginalised groups/communities, or shown empathy in working with these groups, is a plus, but is not required.
