Workshop Engineer - Tramways Heritage (Part-time)

MOTAT is New Zealand’s largest transport and technology museum and is home to some unique examples of operational, industrial, and transport heritage. Our historical trams continue to be a delight for passenger’s day after day and are a vital means of transportation between MOTAT’s two sites. The Museum is currently looking for a part time Workshop Engineer to join the team.

We are seeking a passionate individual with a mechanical and engineering background, and with DC power electrical experience to join the Tramways Heritage team. Based in the workshop, you’ll work within a small team of staff and volunteers keeping our trams operational all year round. Your hands-on mechanical experience will be put to use when servicing and maintaining trams, while your experience in fitting, turning, milling, and welding are essential for manufacturing tram parts.

Suitable candidates for this role will have:

  • An understanding of heavy engineering and a proven aptitude for mechanical work.
  • An Electrical Qualification or equivalent experience with an understanding of DC power.
  • Experience operating a range of relevant workshop machinery is desirable, with a relevant trade qualification an advantage.
  • A strong team worker with a positive and enthusiastic “can do” attitude.
  • Basic computer literacy.
  • Current full NZ driver’s licence.
  • Ability to lift heavy items.
  • The willingness to learn to operate a Tram.

This is a part time role working 20 hours per week, Sunday to Tuesday.

Along with settling into a dedicated and passionate team, other benefits offered at MOTAT include a day off for your birthday, additional KiwiSaver contributions and a MOTAT annual pass for you and your family.

If you have the skills and experience and are interested in preserving transport heritage, apply now to join our team!
