Childbirth Educator

Barnardos Bumps to Babies

We are looking for a dynamic individual to join our team in delivering pregnancy and early parenting information and education programmes across the MidCentral district.

This role will mainly operate in Palmerston North but work in Levin, Otaki and Dannevirke may be required at times.

This is a part time, fixed term role, for 10 hours per week until 30 June 2020.

Childbirth Educators support prospective parents preparing for pregnancy, childbirth and parenthood to make informed choices, as well as providing opportunities for new parents to share their experiences and form new social and support networks with other expectant parents. 

The Childbirth Educator will:

  • Work in a team of Educators to deliver programmes to pregnant women, expectant fathers/partners and, where appropriate, their whanau
  • Work within identified community settings to provide pregnancy information and support within local communities
  • Support new ways for families to access information and education by utilising websites and other forms of communication
  • Be involved in ongoing professional development

As part of this role, you will develop and maintain key relationships with maternity service providers and other key health providers.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • demonstrated skills, knowledge and experience in working with parents to help them better understand pregnancy and early parenting
  • knowledge, understanding and experience of supporting adult learning
  • excellent relationship building and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and ages
  • good knowledge of the communities across the MidCentral DHB area and the resources available to support parents
  • previous experience and understanding of a wide range of societal and familial structures (e.g. whānau, hapu, iwi, Pasifika)
  • a relevant tertiary qualification in childbirth education or maternal health is essential
  • your own vehicle, for which mileage will be payable
