Residential Youth Worker - Casual

About the role

Our Specialist Group Home provides a safe, supportive and  home for three young male siblings to develop life skills.

  • As part of a team of Residential Youth Workers you will be responsible for the daily care and programme delivery for our rangatahi.
  • Understanding that relationship is key to supporting positive behaviours, you will be excellent at developing rapport and role modelling positive relationships.
  • As an engaging and fun youth worker, you will be ready to get stuck in and participate in activities with our rangatahi and be a champion advocate for their voice.

Key responsibilities

  • Work with the young men and their family utilising a range of social work skills and strategies consistent with the relevant Barnardos practice approach and framework
  • Actively participate in maintaining a safe and structured whare that provides predictability for our rangatahi
  • Support rangatahi to live healthy and safe lives including teaching them life skills, personal hygiene, engaging in recreational activities
  • Develop, facilitate and monitor programmed activities for rangatahi to engage in
  • Responsible for reporting and documenting daily notes, reporting incidents and other administrative duties
  • Take individual responsibility for Health and Safety Practices
  • Has knowledge and can apply principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi to their everyday practice.

Skills and experience

We are looking for someone who will be a strong advocate for our rangatahi.  You will be resilient and flexible and have an ability to adapt to working with rangatahi from various backgrounds.  You will with a positive attitude and of course a good sense of humour. You will work positively to empower our rangatahi and be respectful of the complex needs of these young people and their whānau. 

To excel in this role you will have:

  • Youth Work / Social work qualification, relevant qualification in social services or be studying towards one
  • At least 2 - 3 years’ experience working with young people who present challenging behaviour
  • Experience in working within a structured environment with strong protocols and practices
  • Full and clean Drivers licence
