Waimea Community Dam - Concrete Construction Workers

The Opportunity

The Waimea Community Dam Project is a regional water security scheme that employs a concrete-face rock fill dam. The dam is approximately 53m high, 220m long and 6m wide at the crest and will have a total reservoir storage volume of approximately 13.4 million cubic metres. The Project will harness the Waimea catchment in order to ensure water is available for 100 years for residential, industrial and commercial needs across the region. It will provide a higher minimum flow improving river health, benefiting instream fish and other aquatic life, recreational pursuits, and environmental amenity values.

This project caters to those who enjoy a technical challenge and being part of a very unique project. With dam construction due to start in early July this year we are keen to add to our experienced, motivated team.

We’re looking for people who want to take a bit of responsibility in their careers and get on with some serious challenging construction. Here at Fulton Hogan we tackle the hard jobs, and we need switched on people to make it happen on the ground.

We are looking for concrete workers with experience in placing concrete on large projects. We have 20,000m3 of concrete within several different structures to place over 2.5 years. The placing team will be responsible for placing and finishing the varied concrete mix designs to the required tolerances and finishes. The dam has many large structures to be constructed including a 180m long concrete conduit to divert the river, this will involve placing 1,000t of steel and 4,000m3 of concrete. The dam foundations require a concrete plinth to be placed against the excavated bedrock, this is a complex concrete structure that is rock bolted along the entire 200m length and climbs up the valley walls at nearly 30deg incline. The dam spillway is a 180m long concrete chute that will evacuate water from the dam once it is full. The spillway requires a very high finish to the concrete to ensure long term durability by allowing the mass of water to efficiently flow without damaging the concrete surface. To seal the main dam structure, slipformed concrete will be placed on the wet side of the embankment. This will be done using a truss slipform system not utilised in New Zealand to this scale in many decades. These concrete pours will be done using low slump concrete as the dam embankment is a 1:1.5 gradient.

We don’t expect everyone to know everything about the job when they first join us. All you need is the right attitude. If you’re motivated and a hard worker then things will happen for you at Fulton Hogan. We give people as much training as we can so that they can go out there and tackle the tough jobs safely. Fulton Hogan will be willing to up-skill the right applicant with an apprenticeship through BCITO as well as providing training in;
