ZyGEM NZ Ltd. is the New Zealand branch of MicroGEM International PLC. We are a small biotech company with branches in the USA, UK and China. Our NZ company will shortly be moving from Hamilton to Dunedin.

MicroGEM’s mission statement is to “Democratise Molecular Biology”. The company aims to take nucleic acid diagnostics out of the laboratory and into the field, farm and doctor’s surgery. In order to do that, we develop instruments and biochemicals that improve and simplify current methods.

An essential part of our work is gene and enzyme discovery from our extensive culture collection of extremophiles. To this end, we are genome sequencing a large portion of the collection. In order to do this project, we need a new staff member capable of assembling, annotating the sequences, curating a DNA database and acting as our go-to person for bioinformatics. Initially, this position will be a one-year fixed-term contract with a good possibility of extending into the future.

The ideal candidate should have a BSc or MSc in genetics and bioinformatics and should be familiar with bioinformatics software on a Unix platform. Types of operations that will be required are:

  • Genome assembly and annotation
  • DNA Database curation
  • Sequence search and alignment
  • Some level of phylogenetic analysis
  • Some level of protein 3D modelling software
  • An understanding of genetics and DNA techniques.
  • Working in Unix (Ubuntu at present)
  • General software and network maintenance

The successful applicant will be working in our new premises in the city centre of Dunedin with a small team of dedicate biologists with a view to change the world!
