Oranga Tamariki – Ministry for Children is transforming the way we work. We have a large, complex workforce, operating in community, residential care and office environments. We also work in partnership with the NGO sector to deliver services for tamariki and rangatahi.

Oranga Tamariki is two years into a multi-year journey to transform the care and protection, and youth justice systems in order to make a positive difference to the lives of New Zealand’s tamariki and rangatahi. We are committed to supporting any child or young person whose wellbeing is at significant risk of harm – now or in the future.  Our vision is: New Zealand values wellbeing of tamariki above all else.

Our People and Leadership function is transforming alongside the organisation and we are looking for an exceptional General Manager to lead our talented team. In this pivotal role, you will guide the team to lift service delivery, build a workforce strategy spanning both our organisation and the needs of the sector, proactively resolve issues and provide the calibre of support that builds confidence and capability in all aspects of the people side of the business. Our desired future is one where we demonstrate that our people matter, and that their skills, capability and wellbeing are critical to realising the vision of Oranga Tamariki.

Within this context, the General Manager People & Leadership is responsible for the development, delivery and implementation of organisational development and human resources strategies, systems, frameworks and processes, the delivery of best practice HR Services and trusted HR advice throughout the organisation. The GM provides HR advice and assurance to the Chief Executive and thought leadership to the Senior Leadership team.

Our ideal candidate will be:

  • An exceptional strategic thinker and driver of change
  • A natural and experienced leader with a depth of HR knowledge and sound judgment
  • Skilled in establishing clear direction and building trusted relationships quickly
  • Experienced leading a large team in a complex environment
