Wellington City Council is looking for a talented and pragmatic Lawyer who is excited about the opportunities to deliver our vision for the city. The ideal candidate will have a background in property or construction matters and will be keen to use their skills across a wide range of different areas for Council (including property, construction and general commercial). You will be part of a pragmatic and supportive team with a focus on a genuine work life balance - our Legal team won NZ In House Team of the Year at the 2018 NZ Lawyer Awards.

The successful applicant will experience a lot of autonomy in this role while being provided with excellent mentoring on commercial legal matters and access to external legal counsel.

In addition, the successful applicant will need to demonstrate the following:

  • Ideally at least two years PQE and the ability to hold a current legal practising certificate, including time spent in an in-house legal role and/or solid law firm experience
  • Experience in commercial property and / or construction matters in a contractual setting is preferred
  • Contract review, commercial drafting and negotiation skills and an ability to provide strategic, solutions focussed legal and contract advice
  • Demonstrated ability to present legal issues, analysis, options and solutions in a practical and understandable manner
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively and in a customer centric manner with a wide range of people within and outside the organisation
  • Experience in drafting and/or interpreting agreements to a high level of quality
  • Ability to operate in a political environment with a high degree of professionalism
