The New Zealand Law Society (NZLS) wishes to recruit a Legal Standards Officer (LSO) to join its busy regulatory team in Auckland.  This is a full time, permanent position.

The NZLS is the regulatory body for all lawyers and one of its core roles is the operation of the Lawyers Complaints Service. The Lawyers Complaints Service is responsible for administering complaints about lawyers and supporting Lawyers Standards Committees (Standards Committees), the statutory committees responsible for determining complaints.

LSOs perform a key role in assisting Standards Committees when investigating and determining complaints.  LSOs are typically legally trained and provide assistance to support the Standards Committee to deal with complaints fairly, efficiently and effectively. They are required to provide a high standard of support and advice, both written and oral, and to remain impartial when dealing with complainants and lawyers.

LSOs deal with a wide range of people, including the public and members of the legal profession. They are required to respond to enquiries from complainants and lawyers and to contact parties to clarify issues and evidence. LSOs attend Standards Committee meetings and carry out initial inquiries or investigations on behalf of the Committees and assist in drafting the Committees’ determinations.

The ideal candidate will be able to work autonomously and efficiently and have a proven ability to concisely summarise complex issues for other parties.  Excellent research, critical thinking, analysis and drafting skills are essential.  A high standard of professionalism and attention to detail are also required.  LSOs are required to work under pressure and ensure that complaints are processed in a timely manner so excellent organising, planning, and time management skills are important.  An awareness of the requirements of confidentiality is essential. Previous experience working in a legal or regulatory environment is an advantage but not a requirement for the role.
