Clinical Data Analyst

Who we are

The Christchurch Heart Institute employs experts in cardiology, genetics, biochemistry and physiology.

It is the only integrated 'bench to bedside to community' cardiovascular research group in New Zealand. Our research focuses on:

  • Discovering and implementing new blood tests for heart disease diagnosis and treatment.
  • Developing new methods for treating heart failure and improving outcomes.
  • Understanding the genetics of heart disease to help explain why heart disease runs in families.

The role

As a Data Analyst within our department, you will use applicable databases and Laboratory Information Systems to help create and run reports and queries, perform data audits, checks and analysis, and assist in the final transfer of datasets to Biostatistics. You will also assist in extracting and manipulating patient data from various sources and maintain and update clinical datasets.

Some key tasks include:

  • Running, modifying existing, or creating new queries to manipulate and extract data as required using Microsoft Access and Excel.
  • Following written instructions to perform routine data extractions.
  • Loading data into clinical databases from external applications and data sources, e.g. extracts from other clinical data management systems (in .xls, .txt .cvs etc).
  • Accessing data from patient hospital or outpatient clinic notes using Hospital and other clinical patient databases (i.e. NZHIS).
  • Helping to design case record forms and log sheets specific to individual studies.
  • Creating SQL views, MS Access queries and Crystal reports as directed.
  • Becoming confident in the use of the Laboratory Information Management System (Starlims) application and assist others if required.

Your skills and experience

  • Intermediate to Advanced Microsoft ACCESS and EXCEL skills. Ability to use Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) desirable.
  • Preferable experience with Microsoft SQL Server views and statements.
  • Exposure to Sap Crystal Reports would be beneficial.
  • Experience with relational databases, understanding database structures.
  • Experience at auditing, cleaning and merging varied clinical data sets would be advantageous.
  • Experience with statistical analyses is desirable.
  • Well-developed analysis and problem solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Precision and extreme accuracy in data handling and input.
  • Be competent with word processing, working with spreadsheets and database maintenance.

This is a full-time, fixed-term position for 12 months.
