The Financial Markets Authority (FMA) has established itself as an agency with a critical role in regulating capital markets and financial services in New Zealand and providing better outcomes for investors, consumers, professionals, businesses, and for the New Zealand economy.

Our General Counsel function enables and supports the FMA in promoting and facilitating the development of fair, efficient and transparent markets through the provision of holistic, pragmatic and high quality legal and policy advice required by the FMA to achieve its objectives, while also providing independent assurance that internal processes are operating effectively.

We currently have an opportunity for a Senior or Intermediate Solicitor within the Governance Team which sits within the General Counsel function. You'll be delivering consistent and effective legal and policy advice and expertise to FMA staff and the board with the objective of promoting good governance and supporting the management of enterprise risk within the FMA. The Governance Team is a key lead at the FMA supporting Board and Committee processes, ensuring internal policies and systems encourage best practice appropriate for the FMA, advising on procurement by the FMA, international co-operation agreements, and dealing with information requests.

Tertiary qualified in law, you'll have a minimum of 4+ years' experience in the financial services, public sector or commercial in house environment. A background in governance and board secretarial duties will be desirable, as will experience in a public sector entity dealing with Official Information Act and Privacy Act requests.

Your ability to take ownership and get the job done in a positive and outcome focused manner whilst remaining open to other relevant views and options will allow you to truly excel in this role. An interest in good regulatory systems, and the regulation of financial services in New Zealand would also be a beneficial.
