If you are an experience Litigation Solicitor based in Nelson or looking to relocate to Nelson, now is the time to join our committed and forward thinking Legal Team at Oranga Tamariki – Ministry for Children.  This is a permanent, full-time opportunity.

About the role:

Located in our Nelson office and with a focus on the Upper South area (Nelson, Blenheim and the West Coast), you will play a key role providing legal advice and advocacy services to clients and conducting litigation before courts and tribunals, with a focus on ensuring good outcomes for children. This is a role where someone can build relationships in the community and work collectively with others to make a difference for tamariki. You will be supported throughout your work in an environment in which you can thrive.

You will be provided with many opportunities to effectively and efficiently advance cases through the court system.   Providing support in the management of legal issues and risk and be accountable for the conduct of litigation in the Family Court (and at times in the Youth Court or other tribunals) and will provide support in the management of legal issues and risk.

Our legal team supports Oranga Tamariki to achieve the goal of all tamariki being in loving whānau and communities where Oranga Tamariki can be realised.  The team is a central part of the business providing strategic advice across all work areas. You will be involved in providing high quality solution focused legal advice and advocacy services on the range of operational issues facing Oranga Tamariki.

About you:

It is important that you:

  • Have been admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor in New Zealand and have (or be eligible for) a practicing certificate.
  • Exhibit a solid understanding of the justice system.
  • Have excellent communication.
  • Have worked in a team environment previously.
  • Demonstrate relationship management skills with the ability to promote the Legal Services team, internally and externally with our many stakeholders and are able to build strong relationships.
  • Are passionate and committed to achieving good outcomes for children and young people.
  • Ideally have some practical experience of providing advice to clients and in conducting litigation before courts and tribunals.

A full driver licence is essential, as travel may be required as part of this role.
