Strategic Analyst (Regulatory and Pricing)

New Plymouth

The energy sector is in the period of change driven by technology and climate policy. On top of that, Powerco has embarked on a step-change in network investment over coming years. In addition to keeping the lights on and gas flowing, there are a wide range of issues on our radar that require consideration of pricing, regulatory, and commercial impacts.

We're looking for a Strategic Analyst to join Powerco's energetic Regulatory and Pricing team. Reporting to the Regulatory and Pricing Strategy Manager you will be in a unique position to help Powerco (and the industry) make the right decisions and understand the trade-offs. How? You'll apply your rigorous thinking, leverage the experience of internal experts, apply right-sized and robust analysis, then communicate it effectively to a range of stakeholders. #jobdone

You will get to:

  • lead the development of deep and insightful analysis from pricing, regulatory, and commercial lenses across the gas and electricity network businesses
  • develop and maintain models to support bespoke strategic analysis, and Powerco's pricing and cost allocation methodologies and models
  • support Powerco's pricing and regulatory function that engages with customers and stakeholders via pricing and submission processes
  • leverage your strong interpersonal skills as you work collaboratively with experts from across the business
  • flex your intellectual curiosity because youll be looking at economic, financial and technical issues that affect the business both now and in the future.

Were a small team so we share the tasks. Your role will involve the following:

  • Providing financial modelling and analytical advice to support policy and regulatory initiatives across the gas and electricity sector
  • Maintaining, reviewing and developing existing and new models to support pricing analysis over the short and long-term
  • Assisting the electricity pricing manager to deliver annual price reviews
  • Assisting with the development, implementation and supporting analysis of pricing reform and associated supporting tactical initiatives
  • Developing and delivering analysis, information and reports to internal and external stakeholders

The person we are looking for will need a combination of:

  • a tertiary degree or equivalent in finance or economics or similar analytical subject
  • ideally five or more years experience of work in a commercial/analytical capacity involving financial modelling and quantitative problem solving
  • some knowledge of the NZ electricity and/or gas industry and the associated market and regulatory arrangements
  • the curiosity and persistence to own and resolve complex issues.
